A stick shift or manual transmission requires a driver operated clutch to shift through the gears. This is the main difference it has with an automatic transmission. The clutch is subjected to friction and this is the main reason for breakdowns. Here are other manual transmission problems and how to resolve them.
Transmission shifts hard
Leaking transmission lubricant
You'll know your transmission is leaking when you see gear oil in your driveway. During your regular check up, you'll discover abnormally low oil level. The engine's temperature will raise and stay hot most of the time. Transmission oil is an essential part of your car. Common causes of leaks are putting excessive lubricant, cracks in the case, loose bolts, misplaced drain plug, and clogged vent hole. You can find the general location of a leak by placing a newspaper under your transmission. Make sure you keep the gear oil in its recommended working levels.
Noisy transmission
When this is the case, you probably need a mechanic to fix it. This could be caused by lack of lubrication, worn out gears and bearings, damaged synchronizers and gear teeth.
Noise in neutral
When there's insufficient lubricant, worn gear teeth or bearings, or damaged reverse idler gear, you will hear noises when you go on idle.
Stuck clutch
There are times when the clutch doesn't release the drive train. You might be pressing on the clutch but you can't change gears. Then when you've released the clutch, the car has problems accelerating. When this happens, you might need to adjust the clutch or replace it. It depends on the condition of your clutch.
